Direct answer

FD = fixed return (big banks ≈ 6.25–6.5% for 1–5 years, Oct 2026), fully taxable, easy to access. PPF = 7.1% (Oct–Dec 2026), government-backed and tax-free, but locked for 15 years. Equity SIP = no fixed return, can fall in value, but historically the best long-run growth. Use FDs for money needed soon, PPF for long-term tax-free debt, SIPs for goals 7+ years away.

*Equity returns are assumptions, not forecasts. SIP tax assumes the whole corpus is redeemed in one year with only one ₹1.25 lakh LTCG exemption (12.5% + 4% cess). RD/FD tax is approximated by compounding at the post-tax rate (4.47%) because interest is taxed every year. PPF assumes ₹1.2 lakh deposited by 5 April each year. Monthly bank RDs rarely exceed 10 years — treat the 15-year RD/FD figure as rolling deposits at the same rate.

For a 30% slab investor, PPF's tax-free 7.1% beats a 6.5% FD by a wide margin over 15 years. An equity SIP has a higher expected value but a wide range of outcomes — in a poor decade it could end below PPF.

FAQ — answered simply

Which is better: SIP, FD or PPF?

They do different jobs. FDs give a fixed return and quick access (taxable at slab), PPF gives a government-backed, tax-free 7.1% (Oct–Dec 2026) with a 15-year lock-in, and an equity SIP can grow faster over long periods but can fall in value. Match the product to the goal's time horizon and your need for certainty.

What are current FD and PPF rates?

PPF is 7.1% for 1 October–31 December 2026 (Ministry of Finance). Big-bank FDs for 1–5 years are roughly 6.25%–6.50% for the general public and 6.75%–7.10% for senior citizens (SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank rate pages, checked 3 October 2026).

How is each taxed?

FD and RD interest is taxed at your slab rate every year. PPF is exempt at deposit (old regime 80C), on interest and on maturity. Equity mutual fund gains held over 12 months are taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh a year; within 12 months at 20%.

Is SIP risky compared with FD?

Yes, in the short run. An equity SIP can show losses for a year or more, while an FD's value never falls. Over 10–15 years diversified equity has historically beaten FDs, but there is no guarantee; that's why short-term money belongs in FDs or debt.

Can I combine them?

Most households do: an emergency fund in savings/FDs, long-term tax-free debt in PPF, and equity SIPs for goals more than 7 years away. The mix depends on your goals and risk tolerance.
