Direct answer
To build ₹1 crore you need roughly ₹10,009 a month for 20 years, ₹19,819 for 15 years or ₹43,041 for 10 years at an assumed 12% annual return. At 10% the figures are ₹13,060, ₹23,928 and ₹48,414. These are illustrations — equity returns are not guaranteed.
Monthly SIP needed for ₹1 crore
| Years | @ 8% | @ 10% | @ 12% | @ 14% | Total invested @ 12% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 years | ₹1,35,196 | ₹1,28,070 | ₹1,21,232 | ₹1,14,678 | ₹72.74 lakh |
| 7 years | ₹88,605 | ₹81,995 | ₹75,770 | ₹69,918 | ₹63.65 lakh |
| 10 years | ₹54,299 | ₹48,414 | ₹43,041 | ₹38,155 | ₹51.65 lakh |
| 12 years | ₹41,303 | ₹35,876 | ₹31,032 | ₹26,734 | ₹44.69 lakh |
| 15 years | ₹28,707 | ₹23,928 | ₹19,819 | ₹16,317 | ₹35.67 lakh |
| 20 years | ₹16,865 | ₹13,060 | ₹10,009 | ₹7,597 | ₹24.02 lakh |
| 25 years | ₹10,445 | ₹7,474 | ₹5,270 | ₹3,667 | ₹15.81 lakh |
| 30 years | ₹6,665 | ₹4,387 | ₹2,833 | ₹1,800 | ₹10.20 lakh |
Formula: SIP = ₹1,00,00,000 ÷ {[(1 + i)^n − 1] / i × (1 + i)}, i = annual return ÷ 12, n = months; SIP paid at the start of each month. Same maths as the SIP calculator.
Time does the heavy lifting
Waiting five years roughly doubles the monthly amount needed. If you can't afford the full SIP today, start smaller and raise it each year.
Step-up SIP: start lower, raise it yearly
| Years | Flat SIP | Start with 5% step-up | Start with 10% step-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 years | ₹43,041 | ₹35,882 | ₹29,636 |
| 15 years | ₹19,819 | ₹15,312 | ₹11,516 |
| 20 years | ₹10,009 | ₹7,279 | ₹5,028 |
| 25 years | ₹5,270 | ₹3,657 | ₹2,339 |
Step-up = SIP rises by that percentage once a year. Try your numbers in the step-up SIP calculator.

What ₹1 crore will really be worth
| Years from now | At 5% inflation | At 6% inflation | At 7% inflation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 years | ₹61.39 lakh | ₹55.84 lakh | ₹50.83 lakh |
| 15 years | ₹48.10 lakh | ₹41.73 lakh | ₹36.24 lakh |
| 20 years | ₹37.69 lakh | ₹31.18 lakh | ₹25.84 lakh |
| 25 years | ₹29.53 lakh | ₹23.30 lakh | ₹18.42 lakh |
| 30 years | ₹23.14 lakh | ₹17.41 lakh | ₹13.14 lakh |
₹1 crore in 20 years at 6% inflation buys what about ₹31.18 lakh buys today. If your goal is ₹1 crore of today's spending power in 20 years, the target becomes about ₹3.21 crore — use the goal calculator to inflate goals first. Inflation rates here are assumptions.
Can PPF, FD or RD get you to ₹1 crore?
Guaranteed options grow slower. The maximum PPF deposit of ₹1.5 lakh a year at the current 7.1% (Oct–Dec 2026) gives about ₹40.68 lakh after 15 years and ₹1.03 crore after 25 years with two 5-year extensions — tax-free, but slow and rate-reset every quarter. Compare all three in SIP vs FD vs PPF 2026 and the PPF calculator.
Make the plan stick
- Set the goal in today's rupees, inflate it, and pick a realistic horizon.
- Choose low-cost diversified funds — a regular plan's extra expense ratio compounds too (TER gap study).
- Automate the SIP a few days after salary credit; the exact date barely matters (SIP date study).
- Step up the SIP with every raise and review once a year; track progress with XIRR (XIRR vs CAGR).
