SSY formula
Deposits are assumed at the start of each financial year (interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and month-end, so deposit by 5 April):
Years 1–15: B = (B + D) × (1 + r) · Years 16–21: B = B × (1 + r)
Example: D = ₹1,50,000, r = 0.08199999999999999. After 15 years the balance is about ₹44,75,989; six more years of interest take it to about ₹71,82,119.

SSY vs PPF for a daughter's goals
Same pattern — ₹1.5 lakh a year for 15 years, left to compound until year 21: SSY at 8.2% gives about ₹71,82,119; PPF at 7.1% about ₹61,39,600 (PPF extended without deposits). Both are EEE and share the ₹1.5 lakh old-regime deduction limit. SSY wins on rate and is tied to the girl's education/marriage; PPF is more flexible (anyone can open it, withdrawals from year 7). For goals 15+ years away, many parents add an equity SIP for growth — see the goal calculator and SIP calculator.
Rates are reset quarterly; long projections assume today's rate holds, which is unlikely to be exact.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Sukanya Samriddhi interest rate for October–December 2026?
8.2% a year, compounded annually. The Ministry of Finance kept all small savings rates unchanged for Q3 FY 2026-27 (1 October – 31 December 2026). Rates are reviewed every quarter, so long projections are estimates.
How much will I get if I deposit ₹1.5 lakh a year in Sukanya Samriddhi?
At 8.2% throughout, ₹1,50,000 a year for the 15 deposit years (₹22.5 lakh in total) grows to about ₹71,82,119 at maturity, 21 years after the account is opened. Interest of about ₹49,32,119 is tax-free.
How many years do I have to deposit in SSY?
Deposits are made for 15 years from the date of opening. The account then keeps earning interest without deposits until it matures 21 years from opening. A minimum of ₹250 a year keeps the account active; the maximum is ₹1.5 lakh per financial year.
What is the SSY maturity if I deposit ₹1,000 or ₹5,000 a month?
₹1,000 a month (₹12,000 a year) grows to about ₹5,74,570 and ₹5,000 a month (₹60,000 a year) to about ₹28,72,848 at 8.2%, assuming the yearly amount is deposited at the start of each financial year.
Who can open a Sukanya Samriddhi account?
A parent or legal guardian can open an account for a girl child below 10 years of age, at a post office or authorised bank. One account per girl, and a maximum of two per family (three in the case of twins or triplets in the second birth).
When can money be withdrawn from SSY?
Up to 50% of the balance at the end of the previous financial year can be withdrawn for education once the girl turns 18 or passes Class 10, whichever is earlier. The account can be closed early for her marriage after she turns 18, or on compassionate grounds. Otherwise it matures 21 years after opening.
Is Sukanya Samriddhi tax-free?
Yes, SSY is EEE: interest and maturity are tax-exempt, and deposits up to ₹1.5 lakh a year are deductible under the old tax regime (the 80C limit, shared with PPF, EPF, ELSS and others). The new regime does not allow the deduction, but the interest remains tax-free.
