By Pratik Bajoria, Chartered Accountant & NISM-certified Research Analyst · Updated 3 October 2026 · EPF rate 8.25% declared for FY 2025-26

The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF), run by EPFO, is the default retirement savings for most salaried Indians: you and your employer each contribute 12% of basic + DA every month, and the balance earns a rate declared every year. This EPF calculator projects your PF balance at retirement with salary hikes, the EPS split and EPFO's monthly-balance interest method. The latest declared rate is 8.25% for FY 2025-26, recommended by EPFO's Central Board of Trustees (PIB release) and credited under EPFO's order of 1 July 2026.

EPF interest formula

Yearly interest = (Σ month-end running balances × rate) ÷ 1,200 — credited once at year end

Example: ₹30,000 basic + DA, 12% each, 5% yearly hike, 8.25% interest for 30 years → about ₹1,60,92,843. Of this, your contributions are ₹28,70,158, the employer's EPF share ₹24,20,338, and interest ₹1,08,02,347 — interest is the largest component.

Frequently asked questions

What is the EPF interest rate for 2025-26?

8.25% a year. EPFO's Central Board of Trustees recommended 8.25% for FY 2025-26, the Government approved it and EPFO issued the order to credit it on 1 July 2026. It is the same rate as FY 2023-24 and FY 2024-25. The rate for FY 2026-27 will be declared after the year.

How is EPF interest calculated?

EPFO computes interest every month on the running balance (opening balance plus contributions to date) at the annual rate ÷ 12, adds up the 12 months and credits the total once a year. This calculator follows the same method and assumes your salary rises once a year.

How much of my employer's 12% goes to EPF?

Your employer also contributes 12% of basic + DA, but 8.33% of wages up to ₹15,000 (a maximum of ₹1,250 a month) goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS). The rest goes to your EPF account. On ₹30,000 basic, the employer's ₹3,600 splits into ₹1,250 EPS and ₹2,350 EPF.

What will my EPF be at 58 on a ₹30,000 basic salary?

Illustration: starting at ₹30,000 basic + DA with 12% contributions, a 5% yearly hike and 8.25% interest throughout, the balance after 30 years is about ₹1,60,92,843. Without any salary increase it would be about ₹88,48,033. Interest rates and salary growth will differ in reality.

Is EPF interest taxable?

Interest on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year (₹5 lakh if your employer does not contribute) is taxable, under rules in force since 1 April 2021. Employer contributions to EPF, NPS and superannuation above ₹7.5 lakh a year in total are taxable as perquisites. Withdrawals after 5 years of continuous service are tax-free; earlier withdrawals are generally taxable with TDS.

What is VPF and should I use it?

Voluntary Provident Fund lets you contribute more than 12% of basic + DA; it earns the same EPF rate. Raising your contribution to 20% in the example above increases the 30-year balance to about ₹2,20,76,435. Keep the ₹2.5 lakh taxable-interest threshold and your liquidity needs in mind.

Does the new labour code change EPF?

The Code on Social Security, 2020, in force from 21 November 2025, defines wages as basic pay, dearness allowance and retaining allowance, and adds back excluded allowances above 50% of total remuneration. Where this raises your 'wages', PF contributions (and gratuity) rise too, and take-home pay may fall. How your employer applies it depends on your salary structure — check your payslip.
