How to Read a Mutual Fund Factsheet Before Starting or Reviewing a SIP

A mutual fund factsheet is not a recommendation. It is a monthly scheme snapshot that helps an investor verify what the scheme is, where it invests and how it has been disclosed. That is especially useful when platform data, social posts and headline performance all point in different directions.

Direct answer

Before starting or reviewing a SIP, read the latest AMC factsheet alongside the Scheme Information Document. Begin with the scheme objective and Riskometer, then review portfolio allocation, expenses and performance relative to the stated benchmark. Do not select or switch a fund solely because one number—such as a recent return or expense ratio—looks attractive.

AMFI describes a fund factsheet as a monthly overview of the scheme, with particular emphasis on portfolio and performance disclosures. It is a useful starting point, not a substitute for understanding the scheme documents.

1. Confirm the scheme and plan

Start with the exact scheme name, category, option and plan. Similar-looking names can refer to a Direct or Regular Plan, or to Growth or IDCW options. These choices can affect costs, cash-flow treatment and how the holding is presented.

Check the factsheet date too. A factsheet describes a snapshot, not necessarily today's portfolio or NAV.

2. Read the investment objective and Riskometer

The objective explains what the fund is trying to do; it does not promise an outcome. The Riskometer provides a standardised risk disclosure. SEBI explains that it reflects risk characteristics based on factors including the nature of underlying assets, market volatility, credit risk and interest-rate sensitivity.

Use these two disclosures together. A fund can have a strong recent return and still be unsuitable for a short-dated goal or for an investor who cannot tolerate a material fall in value.

3. Review how the money is invested

The portfolio section shows the kinds of securities held and their weights. In an equity scheme, an investor may want to understand sector and company concentration. In a debt scheme, the quality, maturity and interest-rate sensitivity disclosures can be relevant. In a hybrid scheme, the equity-debt split matters because it can change the portfolio's overall behaviour.

The point is not to predict every holding. It is to check whether the actual portfolio broadly matches the scheme objective and the risk you thought you were taking.

4. Put expense ratio in context

Expense ratio is important because it is a recurring scheme cost, but it is not a complete decision rule. Compare like with like: the same plan type, similar category and the same factsheet period. A lower expense ratio alone does not establish that a scheme is appropriate for a particular goal.

If a platform's figure differs from the AMC's disclosure, use the latest AMC factsheet and scheme documents as the first reference point.

5. Read performance without chasing it

Factsheets generally show returns for specified periods and a benchmark comparison. Those figures describe past performance only. Ask whether the period, benchmark and risk taken are relevant to the question you are trying to answer. Avoid treating a recent ranking as evidence that the next period will look the same.

SEBI's Mutual Funds Regulations and Master Circular provide the current regulatory framework for mutual fund disclosures: https://www.sebi.gov.in/legal/master-circulars/mar-2026/master-circular-for-mutual-funds_100491.html

A five-minute factsheet routine

  1. Confirm scheme, plan, option and factsheet date.
  2. Read the objective and Riskometer.
  3. Look at the portfolio allocation and concentration.
  4. Compare expense disclosures on a like-for-like basis.
  5. Treat returns as historical information, then revisit the goal, time horizon and liquidity need.
